Overheating toy scooter starts house fire in Naperville

An overheating toy scooter sparked a minor house fire in Naperville Wednesday evening, according to a news release by the Naperville Fire Department.

According to the initial investigation, the two-wheeled toy scooter — similar to a hoverboard — overheated in the basement of a home on the 5000 block of Bamboo Lane a few minutes after 6 p.m. By the time the first crews arrived at 6:17 p.m., the one person who had been in the house, described in the release as a teenager, had already exited the home.

Crews on the scene were able to extinguish the fire in less than 10 minutes.

“There was minimal to moderate damage,” Bureau Chief Amy Scheller said. “The house was still habitable.”

Scheller said the fire was initially reported by the home's automated alarm system at 6:11 p.m., about two minutes before the teen called 911.
