Strangled Chicago woman's son sues city, Cook County

CHICAGO (AP) - A slain Chicago woman's son has filed a lawsuit against the city and Cook County, arguing steps weren't taken to protect her from the man accused in her death.

The Chicago Tribune reports (http://trib.in/290L6YT ) the lawsuit filed Monday in Cook County Circuit Court contends Vanessa Taylor was strangled in her apartment in June 2015 after James Thomas was released from the hospital following a mental evaluation. Thomas was later charged with murder.

Steven Taylor argues authorities improperly allowed Thomas' release from Stroger Hospital. Thomas was taken there after he threatened police at knifepoint. The lawsuit says Vanessa Taylor was found strangled in her apartment the day after Thomas' release.

The lawsuit claims officers didn't fully investigate previous alleged abuse.

The Chicago Law Department declined comment. Hospital officials couldn't be reached for comment.
