Mount Prospect's Food Pantry is in low supply

The Village Food Pantry serves individuals and families of all ages throughout Mount Prospect and is currently in low supply of much-needed items. Many residents are not aware that seniors experience food insecurity in Mount Prospect and neighboring communities throughout the year.

While many think of donating to the food pantry around the holiday season, summertime is not as common. The need during this time of the year is especially high, since children who received free or reduced lunches during the school year are now on school break.

"We are adding an extra bag of food to families with school-age children during the summer break this year. Families are telling us this is of great help. We are also very fortunate to receive donations of fruit and vegetables through the Mount Prospect Lions Club Farmers Market during their farmers market season. Volunteers pack the fresh produce, which is then available Monday afternoons at the Community Connections Center, 1711 W. Algonquin Road," said Victoria Bran, the center's coordinator.

The Human Services Department relies on community donations to respond to these needs. A list of suggested food can be found at www.mountprospect.org/foodpantry.
