Hawaii dismisses defensive back for code violation

HONOLULU (AP) - The University of Hawaii on Monday dismissed defensive lineman Kennedy Tulimasealii from the football team for violating the school's conduct code.

Hawaii athletic director David Matlin says in a statement that any student who is convicted of a felony, or pleads guilty or no contest to a felony charge "shall be permanently dismissed from the team."

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/28ZHhQZ) Tulimasealii pleaded no contest earlier this month to six criminal charges, including a felony count for property damage.

Tulimasealii, who led the Rainbow Warriors in tackles for losses last year, is seeking a deferral, which would expunge the charges if he doesn't get into legal trouble over a certain amount of time. A judge will decide on the deferral at the sentencing hearing, scheduled for Aug. 24.
