Boomers' win streak snapped in extra innings

The Schaumburg Boomers faltered in the later innings Sunday afternoon and saw their consecutive wins and home wins streak snapped in a 5-4 extra innings loss to Washington.

Boomers starter Kagen Hopkins and Wild Things hurler Luke Wilkins kept the bats quiet for much of the game. Hopkins retired the first 11 men he faced and Wilkins allowed just 1 hit in his first 5 innings of work. Schaumburg broke through in the sixth when Kenny Towns singled home Zach Weigel to put the Boomers up 1-0. The sun gave an assist the next inning as Washington's Bryan Haar lost a pop-up from Weigel in the bright sky and allowed Nick Lynch to score.

The Wild Things ended Evan Boyd's consecutive scoreless innings streak in the eighth with an RBI single to pull to 2-1 and added another run in the ninth to send it to extras.

The game went to the international tiebreaker in the 11th as the Wild Things scored 3 runs to grab a 5-2 advantage. The Boomers mounted a comeback in the bottom of the frame but fell short as Mikal Hill grounded back to the pitcher with the bases loaded to end the game.

Hopkins did not factor in the decision but threw 7 innings, surrendering just 2 hits and striking out a career-high 8 batters.

Schaumburg has a day off Monday before heading to Southern Illinois as they try to get back to their winning ways.
