HCS Family Services continues tradition of collecting food and funds at annual Hinsdale Independence Parade

When Hinsdale officials kick off the annual Independence Day parade at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 4, a familiar tradition of collecting nonperishable food and funds for HCS Family Services will continue.

Since 1937, HCS Family Services has been helping families in southeast DuPage County maintain self-sufficiency by providing those in need with nutritious food and basic assistance. In recent months, there has been an increase in the number of people seeking help at HCS Family Services' food pantry.

Summer is particularly difficult time for families in need, as children are home for summer break, and thus additional food for lunch and snacks is needed. One in seven children in DuPage County are at risk of hunger.

HCS Family Services representatives will collect donations of canned and dry foods to help stock pantry shelves. Monetary donations will also be accepted to help the pantry in its mission and to purchase most-needed foods.

Not sure what to donate? Canned fruits, vegetables and soups, particularly those low in sugar and sodium, are always needed. Cereal, rice and pastas also make good donations.
