Advocate Good Shepherd wins prestigious Lantern Award from Emergency Nurses Association

Barrington, Ill - Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital has been recognized for its commitment to exceptional patient care as a recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award. The award recognizes a select group of emergency departments that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

All emergency departments are eligible to apply for the Lantern Award, but those selected must meet the highest excellence standards. The Good Shepherd Hospital ED is only one of 11 hospital EDs nationwide to receive the Lantern Award this year.

"We are excited and honored to be one of the few hospitals to receive this prestigious award," says Dr. Romolo, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. "It recognizes the teamwork and dedication of the entire emergency services staff as we work to continue to improve our ability to deliver high quality services to our community."

Emergency department patients and their families seek quick access, meaningful interactions with the health care team and a coordinated plan. The Lantern Award is a visible symbol of an ED's commitment to quality, presence of a healthy work environment and accomplishment in incorporating evidence-based practice and innovation into emergency care. Successful applications demonstrate a variety of diverse initiatives throughout the application with quantifiable outcomes, sustained improvements and innovative processes. A team of reviewers thoroughly evaluate the submissions through a blinded review process.

Good Shepherd Hospital's Emergency Department has now received the ENA Lantern Award two consecutive times; the first being in 2012.

"The Lantern Award represents the acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication by the Emergency and Trauma Service at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital and the excellent care we provide to our patients," says Roseanne Niese, director of emergency and medical surgical services at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. "That is what this means to me as their clinical director - making sure we do an excellent job for the patient and their family. I am truly humbled and honored to have our Emergency Department meet the criteria a second time."

The Lantern Award recognition is valid for three years. The emergency team will receive the award at Emergency Nursing 2016 in Los Angeles this September.

The Lantern Award is named in honor of Florence Nightingale, who is credited with changing nursing from an untrained job to a skilled, science-based profession. She is referred to as the "Lady of the Lamp" for her actions during the Crimean War when she worked deep into the night, bringing a lantern with her as she tended to wounded British soldiers as they slept.
