July 11-14: CLC Quest program explores Cultural Chicago

Explore the culture of Chicago by enrolling in College of Lake County's Quest program Monday through Thursday, July 11-14, designed for adults 50 and over.

Participants will learn about Chicago's culture through studying architecture, history, film and the arts. The classes, taught by CLC professors and other experts, are held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CLC's Southlake Campus in Vernon Hills. A tour of the Glessner House Museum is included in the $189 cost.

The sessions include the following:

• Literature, taught by Sara Stephens, focusing on how the upper class lived and a look at who the movers and shakers of the early 20th century were. Held Monday morning.

• Legacy of Laughs, taught by Barry Bradford, takes a look at Chicago's comedy scene and The Second City. Held Monday afternoon.

• History and Culture, taught by Dr. David Groeninger, will examine the newspapers, amusement parks, vaudeville theaters, dance halls, movie houses, cabarets and sports stadiums that attracted Chicagoans of every class, race, ethnicity and gender. Held Tuesday morning.

• How Culture and Arts Impact Chicago's Global Status, with David Groeninger, looks at how Chicago ranks with other world-class cities in the arts, culture, financial services, information flow, high-tech innovation, transportation and population. Held Tuesday afternoon.

• Music in Performance, presented by Ingrid Mikolajczyk, will look at Chicago's classical music summer season from a performer's perspective. Held Wednesday morning.

• "Risky Business," taught by John Kupetz, includes a showing and discussion of the popular 1983 film from Paul Brickman that stars Tom Cruise. Set in Chicago and its surroundings, the city serves as the back drop for culture, privilege, status, access and futures. Held Wednesday afternoon.

• Glessner House Museum Field Trip. Tour a National Historic Landmark designed by noted American architect Henry Hobson Richardson and completed in 1887. It remains an internationally-known architectural treasure in Chicago. Held Thursday.
