St. Charles teen Stephen Richmann earns Eagle Scout

Stephen Richmann of Boy Scout Troop 13 in St. Charles was named Eagle Scout at the June 19 Court of Honor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Charles.

His project involved constructing a rain garden at Anderson Park, 5N180 Brown Road in Campton Township. Stephen researched native plants that would thrive in the wet soil within a natural depression in the ground. The rain garden functions as a natural filtration system to reduce surface pollution. The project also involved the installation of a limestone trail. At the end of the trail is a bench that he led volunteers in building and installing. Stephen also installed an informational sign explaining the purpose of the rain garden. He raised donations for the project including mulch from Midwest Groundcovers in St. Charles, plants from Pizzo Native Plant Nursery in Leland, and lumber for the bench from Home Depot.

Stephen earned 33 Merit Badges as a Scout and held numerous leadership positions including Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Chaplain's Aide, Historian, Scribe, Order of the Arrow Representative, Patrol Leader (three terms), Assistant Patrol Leader, and Patrol Quartermaster (two terms). Stephen camped over 120 nights of Scout camping including four years at Gerber Scout summer camp and High Adventure trips to Boundary Waters and Philmont Scout Ranch.

Stephen is also very active outside of Scouting including attending the National Youth Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. in 2013. He was a member of the St. Charles East High School chamber orchestra (piano), announcement team, cross country and track team, and math team. He also was the St. Charles East mascot. Stephen was in the top 5 percent of his class at St. Charles East and received academic high honors, as well as being named an Illinois State Scholar. Stephen was also a Leader with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A spring graduate of St. Charles East, he will be attending Hillsdale College in Michigan and majoring in math.
