WBBM Newsradio wins Murrow Award

WBBM Newsradio 780 & 105.9 FM has been awarded a National Edward R Murrow Award for the station's coverage following the release of police video capturing the shooting of Laquan McDonald.

WBBM won the award in the Large Market Breaking News Coverage category. The Edward R. Murrow Award is given by The Radio Television Digital News Association for outstanding achievements in electronic journalism.

The station reported events following the November 2015 video release, including public protests, demonstrations, political turmoil, demands for investigation on how the case was handled, and the firing of Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

McDonald, armed with a knife, was shot 16 times at close range by Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke on Oct. 20, 2014. Police dashboard camera footage was released to the public by court order a year later after demand by independent investigators. On the same day the video was released, Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder.
