Seventeen CLC students receive special awards or scholarships for 2015-16

From athletes to international students, 17 College of Lake County students were honored with special awards or scholarships during the 2015-16 academic year. What follows is a list of award recipients, organized by category.

The Chronicle student newspaper:

Cydney Salvador (Lindenhurst resident, Grayslake North graduate), who served as editor in chief, was named Illinois Community College Journalism Association (ICCJA) Editorial Writer of the Year, given to one journalist among all student newspapers.

Phi Theta Kappa, CLC Alpha Alpha Pi chapter:

Cristian Carrillo (Gurnee resident, Warren High School graduate) and 2015-16 president, was named to the PTK All-Illinois Team. The recognition is sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa, "USA Today" and the American Association of Community Colleges. Carrillo also received the Abbey Family Fund Scholarship awards full tuition, fees and books for full-time students with a least a 3.0 grade point average. Rachel Le (Gurnee resident, Warren High School graduate) also received the PTK All-Illinois Award. In addition to serving as vice president of PTK, Le served as a Student Government Association senator and member of Asian Student Alliance.

Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference - Co-curricular Competition:

Larry Rockoff (Vernon Hills resident, Stevenson High School graduate) received a first-place writing award in the drama category for his work titled, "The English Class."

Tomoko Funahashi (international student from Japan) received a third-place writing award in the poetry category for "Hints of Fall."

Yunyi Xing (international student from China) took second place in the STEM biology poster category for "The role of puffball (Calvatia gigantea) spores in blood coagulation rates."

Sarah Zeman (Lake Zurich resident, Lake Zurich High School graduate) and George Vasilyev (Vernon Hills resident, Stevenson High School graduate) both received a third-place award in the STEM biology category for their work, titled "The effect of peppermint and rosemary on planaria (Dugesia dorotocephala) regeneration."

Oscar Araiza Bravo (Mundelein resident, Mundelein High School graduate), Nathaniel Bleier (Lake Bluff resident, Lake Forest High School graduate) and Wes Hampson (Winthrop Harbor resident, Zion-Benton Township West High School graduate) received a third-place award in the STEM engineering poster category for their work, titled "The dice is right."

Student Government Association (SGA):

Carlos Catalan (Beach Park resident, Waukegan High School graduate), who served as SGA vice president in 2015-2016, received the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Catalan also was named a Student Laureate of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois, an award given to students for their leadership, service and excellence in both curricular and extracurricular activities.

Connor Mallon (Grayslake resident, Grayslake High School graduate), who in 2015-16 served as SGA president and member of the Men of Vision student club, received a transfer honors scholarship to Elmhurst College.

Yesenia Mata (Round Lake resident, Round Lake High School graduate), a 2015-16 student Trustee 2015-16 and member of the Latino Alliance, received the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Gigi Campbell Student Trustee Excellence Award for exemplary leadership.

Athletics:

Basketball player Daniel (D.J.) Ostrander (Lake Villa resident, Lighthouse Academy graduate), along with volleyball player Hannah Cassiday (Spring Grove resident, Grant High School graduate), each have received the Skyway Conference Dick Durant Award. The award goes to the male and female student-athletes in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference who attain the highest grade point average after completing four semesters of college work and at least 48 semester hours of credit.)

Other Awards:

Kara Barbieri (Gurnee resident), took first place in the statewide Illinois Community College Trustees Association Paul Simon Essay Contest for her essay titled, "How My Community College Has Changed My Life."

Yuze Zhong (an international student from China) received an Illinois Institute of Technology Scholarship.
