Des Plaines Park District and Lurvey's Staff to Host Herbs Workshop June 22

The Des Plaines Park District and the experts at Lurvey Garden Center will be holding a gardening seminar titled "All About Herbs" in the park district greenhouse at the Leisure Center Wednesday, June 22.

The seminar, which runs from 6:00pm-7:00pm, will focus on how to plant herbs, what grows well together, and even how to grow herbs in containers if you have limited space. It will also teach participants the best methods for the proper maintenance and upkeep of herb plants as well as what you should do with different types of herbs after you've trimmed them.

The purpose of the seminar, according to Lurvey's staff member Jean Bragdon, is to "show people how to use herbs in the most efficient way possible in any type of space whether you have a big yard, a deck or even a small balcony."

The Lurvey's staff will also be providing some simple recipes for foods that the herbs discussed pair well with.

"Not everybody turns their basil into a pesto, there are many uses and we will make sure that everybody knows where their herbs can be used most effectively," Bragdon said.

In addition to the discussion, the seminar will also feature a workshop where you can plant your own row of herbs to take home. The herbs can be planted with a theme, like pizza flavors, or they can be set in a random assortment. Either way, you will get to test out your green thumb under the supervision of professionals who can guide you in the right direction when it comes to what's next.

"It's important to know what to use and how fast things grow; people always wonder not only how do I grow it but also how can I use it?" Bragdon said. "We want to keep it simple for everyone and take the mystery out of things!"

The park district greenhouse is located at the Leisure Center, 2222 Birch St.
