Geneva adding 2nd artistic bike rack to downtown

Cyclists will have another artistic rack to which to lock their bicycles when visiting downtown Geneva.

The city's Cultural Arts Commission is planning to buy a burnished steel sculptural rack, "A Unique Cycle," from local artist Jim Jenkins. The public art advisory committee approved the choice May 31.

The city council gave preliminary approval to the purchase Monday night, and will take a binding vote next week.

The commission will pay Jenkins, of Geneva, $3,000 for the rack. It came up with the money through various fundraising activities, and the Mill Race Cyclery shop is also donating $1,000. No tax dollars will be spent on it, said Tim Vetang, chairman of the commission.

"I think it just shows the excitement and positive feelings that people have for the arts," Vetang said.

The rack will be installed at the southeast corner of Fourth and State streets. It would accommodate three bicycles.

"I love it. I think it is going to be a great addition to the area," said Alderman Tara Burghart, who is a neighbor of Jenkins.

Jenkins' other works include the dragonfly-motif railings at Geneva's RiverPark, and the "Deus Ex Machina" sculpture outside the Santori Public Library in downtown Aurora.

The contract calls for the rack to be installed by July 22.

The first rack in the Bike+Art program, "Welcome Rounds," was installed in 2014 at 113 S. Third St., near the Geneva History Museum.
