Letter writing campaign focuses nutrition programs

Members of Trinity Lutheran Church, 675 E. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, participated in Bread for the World's annual Offering of Letters campaign, which engages churches, campuses and other faith communities in writing letters to Congress.

Each year the campaign focuses on legislation that can make a real difference to people struggling with hunger and poverty. The theme for the letters this year is "Help Mothers and Children Survive and Thrive." The focus is on international maternal and child nutrition programs.

Nearly half of all childhood deaths in developing countries are caused by hunger or malnutrition. Too many mothers are dying in childbirth from causes that are easily prevented. In the Offering of Letters, letter writers are asking Congress to direct $230 million for international maternal and child nutrition programs.

Every year, Bread for the World urges elected leaders in Washington to enable people in our nation and our world to feed their families and to move out of poverty. Members of congregations are essential to this effort because members of Congress want to hear from you, their constituent, and they do pay attention to your concerns.

Trinity Lutheran Church is asking everyone in the community to write to their congressmen asking them to increase funding for programs for mother and child nutrition.
