Hanover Township to unveil Heritage Marker

Hanover Township will dedicate its eighth Heritage Marker at the township's Izaak Walton Center at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at 899 Jay St., in Elgin.

Formerly named as the Izaak Walton League Lodge, the building was constructed by members of the Elgin Chapter of the Izaak Walton League in 1939 for the use and enjoyment of residents for conservation education, fishing and youth activities.

Over the years it has served as a gathering place for countless community organizations and IWL programs and fundraisers.

Township Supervisor Brian P. McGuire, along with Elgin Mayor David Kaptain and chapter president Bill Jones, will provide remarks at the dedication. The event is open to the public.

"Since the property was gifted to the township in 2013, we have heard many times from residents about the history of the building and the significance of the work done by the organization's members," said McGuire.

"This is a great opportunity to honor that history, and the founders of the chapter, for all their contributions to the community."

Hanover Township's Heritage Marker program works to recognize and promote the many historic locations within the township. Currently, the township has commemorated sites such as Lords Park in Elgin, Villa Olivia in Bartlett, Ahlstrand Park in Hanover Park, Hoosier Grove Schoolhouse in Streamwood, among others.

Immediately following the dedication, the public is invited to an open house event to view the building renovations and hear from township officials and staff about the plans for improving and developing the 11-acre property.

Information on programs and services at the Izaak Walton Center will also be available. The open house runs from 9-11 a.m.

For information on the open house or the heritage marker program, contact the township at (847) 888-8329 or visit www.hanover-township.org.
