Man arrested for 6th DUI in West Dundee

Bail was set at $500,000 for a 57-year-old Rockford man arrested last weekend on charges of his sixth DUI, according to police and court records.

Dwight B. Huffman, of the 400 block of Finch Road, faces felony charges of aggravated DUI and driving while his license is suspended, according to Kane County court records.

West Dundee Police Sgt. Daniel Haines said an officer saw Huffman rear-end another vehicle at about 5 p.m. Sunday while westbound on Route 72 at the intersection of Route 31. Huffman reeked of alcohol and the officer found four bottles of beer in the front seat and a fifth bottle was open and in a beer cozy, reports said.

β€œ(Huffman) rear-ended a car. It was a minor fender bender. Nobody got hurt,” Haines said. β€œHe almost tripped over the median into oncoming traffic when he got out of the car.”

Haines said Huffman's breath test registered a .15 percent blood alcohol concentration.

Huffman had DUI convictions in 1982, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 2007, Haines said.

Haines could not immediately specify where each of the previous five DUI arrests of occurred, but none of the convictions or cases occurred in Kane County, records show.

Huffman also had convictions for driving while his license was revoked in 1983, 2000 and 2001, Haines said. Huffman had two convictions for driving while his license was revoked in 1995 and three convictions in 1991 and 2007, Haines said.

Huffman also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and transportation of open alcohol, records show.

He is next due in court June 29.

If convicted of the most severe aggravated DUI charge, Huffman faces between six and 30 years in prison with no chance of probation.
