Prospect Heights commission to discuss slough upgrades

The Prospect Heights Natural Resource Commission will hold a special meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, June 16, in the council chambers at city hall, 8 N. Elmhurst Road to discuss restoration of the slough southeast of Elmhurst and Willow roads to a more natural state.

The commission's plan include native plantings around the perimeter along with designed walking paths for residents and visitors to enjoy the beauty of the area.

The commission is a volunteer network designed to enhance, restore and manage the natural areas and resources in order to maintain and improve their ecological health and biodiversity. It has been charged by the city with coming up with a plan for the slough and an outside consultant has done a study.

Problems identified include shoreline erosion, high nutrient loads in the water encouraging excessive aquatic plant growth, a large goose population, shallow water depth and invasive plant species.

Residents are encouraged to attend to see what is planned for the restoration, ask questions and provide feedback. More information is at phnrc.com.
