Glenbard North alum shot and killed in Chicago

A 27-year-old Glenbard North High School alum from Hanover Park was shot and killed early Monday in Chicago's South Loop, authorities said.

Sami Talab Salaymeh and a 23-year-old woman were in a black pickup truck at 3:58 a.m. at a traffic light near 24th Street and Michigan Avenue when two people walked up to the vehicle, Chicago police said. One of them, described only as a Hispanic man, pulled a gun and opened fire, police said.

Salaymeh was shot twice in the stomach, and the woman was shot in the right leg, police spokesman Kevin Quade said.

The victims drove to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where Salaymeh was pronounced dead by the Cook County medical examiner at 4:41 a.m. The woman was admitted in stable condition.

No one was in custody as of Tuesday afternoon, police said. Police continue to investigate, but said the shooting does not appear to be gang-related.

Salaymeh is a 2006 graduate of Glenbard North High School.

In 2008, Salaymeh, then a Navy seaman recruit, completed basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Base near North Chicago. He served in the Navy until 2011.
