Victim cut from burning SUV after Elk Grove crash

Elk Grove Village firefighters Tuesday morning extricated a woman from the burning SUV she'd been driving after it crossed the center median on Higgins Road just east of Route 53, struck the guard rail of the eastbound lanes and then hit a truck delivering building materials, officials said.

The woman, estimated to be in her mid-50s, was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village after the collision, which was reported at 9:28 a.m., Deputy Fire Chief Lance Harris said.

The woman had some trauma injuries, authorities said, though her exact condition was unavailable Tuesday night.

There were no other people in the woman's vehicle and no one else was injured, Harris added.

He said that firefighters did a good job at extinguishing a small fire that had started in the SUV's engine compartment even as they were freeing the woman from the vehicle.

The crash created traffic delays around the intersection of Higgins Road and Route 53 near Busse Woods Tuesday morning.

Illinois State Police said they are investigating the crash.
