UK charges 2 men with immigration offenses after boat rescue

LONDON (AP) - UK officials say two British men have been charged after the weekend rescue of 18 Albanians whose small inflatable boat was taking on water in the English Channel.

The Home Office said Monday the two were charged with immigration offenses. There were two British people on board the boat when it started to take on water, but it's not yet clear if those are the men being charged.

The Albanians are being questioned by UK Border Forces in Dover.

John Vine, formerly chief inspector of borders and immigration, says Monday that migrants could end up drowning in the English Channel as they have in the Mediterranean.

The overnight rescue involved a search-and-rescue helicopter and lifeboats from several English ports.
