Baseball: Jacobs wins in 8; Cary-Grove falls

Nate Meland doubled with one out and came home on Kraeton Mull's single to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday to lift Jacobs to a 5-4 win over Belvidere North in the semifinals of the Class 4A Belvidere North baseball regional.

Evan Liebau pitched the final 4 innings for the Golden Eagles in relief of Brad Demkovich and allowed no runs on just 2 hits with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk to earn the win.

Steve Krueger and Daniel Salomon (2 RBI) each added 2 hits for Jacobs, while Mike Addante had a double and an RBI.

The Golden Eagles (21-13) will play Harlem at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional championship.

McHenry 4, Cary-Grove 0: Bobby Miller threw a 2-hitter with 9 strikeouts and 4 walks as McHenry downed Cary-Grove in the Class 4A regional semifinals at Cary-Grove. Matt McCumber took the loss for the Trojans (23-12), allowing 6 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in 6 innings. Mark Smith and Dallas McDonough had Cary-Grove's only hits.
