Girls soccer: Deerfield's history tourney run continues

Deerfield's girls soccer team continues to make school history.

The Warriors upended third-seeded Lake Forest 3-1 on Friday night to capture the Class 2A Grayslake North sectional and hit the 20-win mark for the first time.

No. 1 Deerfield (20-6-1) will next play Chicago Latin in the Concordia University supersectional in River Forest at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Latin got past Chicago Jones 2-1 in the Fenton sectional final on Friday night.

"We've talked to the kids about the history and what we're doing," Deerfield coach Rich Grady said. "We put ourselves in position to make something happen and didn't waste the opportunity. We had some nice goals and didn't sit back."

Chloe Cappas scored twice for Deerfield, and Margot Sylvan added a goal and an assist.

Deerfield scored twice in the first 17 minutes. Cappas scored in the 11th minute, after taking a service from Sylvan. Cappas scored again six minutes later off an assist from Samantha Linn.

Lake Forest (11-9-1) cut its deficit in half in the 29th minute, when Kate Reinhardt scored off a pass from Delaney Williams.

But Deerfield added an insurance goal in the 46th minute from Sylvan. Lake Forest couldn't recover after that, as Deerfield keeper Sari Eisen made 4 of her 6 saves in the second half.

"They had a good game plan and they were disciplined," Lake Forest coach Ty Stuckslager said of the Warriors. "They did exactly what they needed to do. We didn't have our best game because Deerfield played so well."
