The shooting occurred Friday morning at a home on the Indianapolis south side. Officers had forced their way in and, when confronted by the armed man, told him to drop the weapon. Police say that when the man pointed the gun at the trooper, the trooper shot him.

The names of the dead man and trooper weren't immediately released.

The trooper was helping Brown County Sheriff's Department detectives investigating a suspect alleged to have fired multiple gunshots into a Brown County home on May 7.

After the shooting, the trooper was temporarily re-assigned to administrative duties.
