Wauconda man accused of being under influence of pot, charged in pedestrian death

A Wauconda man accused of driving under the influence of marijuana has been charged as a result of a fatal crash with a pedestrian in Volo earlier this month, authorities said.

Lake County sheriff's police said Brandon A. Stang, 23, of the 400 block of North Main Street, surrendered Friday. Authorities received an arrest warrant for one count of aggravated driving under the influence of cannabis and causing death.

Stang remained held in the Lake County jail on $100,000 bail Friday. Lake County sheriff's Detective Christopher Covelli said additional charges are possible against Stang.

Members of the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit obtained the arrest warrant from a judge Thursday. Covelli said medial records confirmed the presence of marijuana in Stang's system at the time of the crash.

Stephanie V. Kostenko, 22, of Lake Zurich, died from multiple injuries after the crash at 2:30 a.m. May 5. Police said Kostenko was crossing Route 12 in Volo just south of Route 120 when she was hit by 2008 Ford Mustang driven by Stang.

Authorities said Stang was driving south on Route 12 when he struck Kostenko.
