Moehling Farm in neighborhood profile

The Moehling Farm subdivision sits on land that was once Irvin Moehling's great-grandfather's 1865 farm, where he grew corn and soybeans on his 200 acres. In the late 1990s and later, much of the land was harvested by real estate developers.

Today, Moehling Farm is a sought-after neighborhood of single-family homes in Des Plaines where residents can see remnants of the historical farm - the century old barn and attractive white frame farmhouse - on the south side of Rand Road between Golf and Wolf roads.

The Moehling Farm subdivision was built by Westfield Homes. The large family homes feature 1,856 to 3,500 square feet, four to five bedrooms, two to four baths and two- to three-car garage.

This is a desirable smaller community with very little turnover, said Delphine Nguyen, a real estate broker with Baird & Warner. Nguyen is marketing a home in the community, which is a rarity because it's the first home for sale in the neighborhood in two years.

"People like the newer homes because they have all the latest amenities that today's buyer wants," Nguyen said. "And the neighborhood is very nicely planned with an attractive curb appeal and a lot of open green space."

Ten years ago, Nenif David and his family moved from Rolling Meadows to Moehling Farm because it was the newest and most homey neighborhood they could find in Des Plaines. "We wanted a larger home for our growing family; this subdivision had a good neighborhood feeling, and the houses were beautiful," David said.

"We walked in and it was a mess, but we liked the architecture, the high ceilings and open floor plan, and we had a vision for what it could be. Then we looked out the window to the backyard, and loved the expansive green space.

"The spacious open floor plan is great for us because my wife likes to cook, and when she's working in the kitchen, she is still with the family because it's all one big space."

The subdivision is a good family neighborhood where people keep an eye out for each other. In the winter, when people have their snowblowers going, they'll do their neighbors' driveways, too, David said. "There's a sense of community here that's really nice."

This is a good location close to Metra, schools and O'Hare International Airport, but people don't hear the planes, Nguyen said.

For neighborhood recreation, Chippewa Park sits behind the subdivision, which offers basketball and tennis courts, sports fields and a swimming pool. There's so much wind in the open area that kids and adults go out and fly kites, and in the winter, the kids go sledding.

The subdivision is in the Des Plaines Park District, which operates two golf courses, a driving range center, Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center, as well as a full range of programs and activities, including summer camps, trips, nature hikes and arts and crafts.

Amenities in town include a state-of-the-art library and ethnic dining options. Nearby Randhurst Village in Mount Prospect offers a movie theater, restaurants and plenty of shopping.

With a thriving industrial sector, Des Plaines is home to several Fortune 500 companies and international businesses that offer employment opportunities.
