Art shows this weekend in Barrington, Schaumburg

The art festival season returns to the Northwest suburbs this weekend with major events in Barrington and Schaumburg. Both festivals run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29.

The seventh annual Barrington Art Festival is along Cook and Station streets in the downtown. It will showcase the work of more than 130 juried artists from around the world in a variety of mediums, including ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, painting, sculpture and more. Admission and parking are free.

In addition to artwork available for purchase, attendees will be able to interact with artists through demonstrations and booth chats. Live music, kid-friendly activities, such as the patARTic graffiti wall, and epicurean delights also will be available for visitors to enjoy.

In Schaumburg, the Prairie Arts Festival, now in its 29th year, offers a relaxed outdoor setting on the grounds of the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center at 101 Schaumburg Court.

Families can enjoy original works by 112 artists while enjoying live music on stages placed throughout the grounds. Visitors can view and purchase art in a variety of media including drawing, fiber art, glass, graphics, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, pottery, and sculpture. The juried show will award cash prizes to artists winning Best of Show, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place, along with eight Merit Awards.

Families with children can also stop by the arts and crafts activity tent sponsored by the Schaumburg Park District.

Food trucks will be serving up Po Boy sandwiches, burritos, pizza, rice bowls, cupcakes and a variety of other menu options.

At the same time, the Prairie Plein Air Competition and Show, featuring works painted in the last month depicting Schaumburg landscapes and landmarks, will be on show in the Herb Aigner Gallery in the Prairie Center for the Arts, which is adjacent to the outdoor show.

Festival admission and parking are free. For more information, call (847) 895-3600, or www.prairiecenter.org.
