Multiple I-290 crashes leave no serious injuries

Nobody was seriously injured in a series of car crashes Thursday evening in a construction area on I-290, Illinois State Police officers said.

The first crash happened just before 10 p.m. on eastbound I-290 just east of Thorndale, Illinois State Sgt. William Stevens said. A total of four separate crashes happened in succession, involving an unknown number of vehicles, he said. Crash reports were not final Thursday evening.

"They were one right after the other. People looking and not paying attention," he said. "When you get five or six lanes funneled into one or two - things like this happen."

The crashes happened in an area affected by the Elgin-O'Hare construction. All lanes were reopened by midnight.
