Sandburg girls train with Heart and Sole running program

Submitted by Mundelein School District 75

Seventeen District 75 sixth through eighth-graders run each week in preparation for a 5K race. The Carl Sandburg Middle School students run with Heart and Sole as part of the Girls on the Run's newest program for middle school girls.

While encouraging fitness, the program is also designed to create a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about body image and develop life skills like decision-making and setting boundaries.

In its fourth year at the Mundelein middle school, the group leaders teach students like sixth-grader Brenda Lagunes "self esteem and how to work together as a team."

"These are the people who support me and whom I trust," seventh-grader Stephanie Diaz said.

The program sponsors follow lesson plans that discuss boundaries and connectedness. The middle school program helps girls develop the skills to tune into their own truths and "to unleash their power to live confidently and joyfully," according to the Girls on the Run literature.
