Mats Hummels completes switch from Dortmund to Bayern

MUNICH (AP) - Germany defender Mats Hummels completed his transfer Monday from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich.

The 27-year-old Hummels signed a five-year deal through June 2021, two weeks after the Bundesliga rivals agreed on the transfer, Bayern announced.

"Not only are we strengthening our squad with a world-class center-back, but also with a player who accepts responsibility and who is our own youth product," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

Hummels played at every level of Bayern's youth set-up after joining at age 6 in 1995. However, he failed to break into the senior team and joined Dortmund in January 2008 after just one league appearance for Bayern.

Hummels played 225 Bundesliga games for Dortmund, winning the league in 2011 and again in 2012, when the club defeated Bayern 5-2 in the German Cup final to complete the double.

"Saying goodbye to Dortmund was difficult for me of course. It was similar to 2008, when it was the other way around," Hummels said.

The former Dortmund captain played his last game for the club against Bayern on Saturday, when it lost its third straight German Cup final.

Hummels is the third major Dortmund player to leave for Bayern in recent seasons, after striker Robert Lewandowski and attacking midfielder Mario Goetze.

German media estimated the deal to be worth 38 million euros ($43.3 million).

Hummels has 46 appearances for Germany.
