College baseball: Grayslake North's Gomski garners postseason accolade at Trinity International

Grayslake North graduate Adam Gomski was one of three baseball players for Trinity International's baseball team to be named to the NCCAA All-North Central region team

The junior infielder helped lead the Trojans to a 23-24-1 mark, the program's best record in six seasons.

Gomski hit for a .341 average over 40 games this season, playing most of the season at third base.

The Lake Villa native finished with 13 multi-hit games, and drove in 2 or more runs eight times. Gomski also made seven appearances on the mound, posting a career-best 3-2 record over 26⅓ innings.

He now advances to the ballot for the NCCAA All-America Team, which will be announced later this month.

• Grinnell College senior outfielder Anthony Mack (Libertyville) was named to the All-Midwest Conference South Division team for the second straight year.

He was also named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region squad both seasons and the D3baseball.com All-Region team in 2015.

Mack ranked sixth in the MWC in both RBI (34) and sacrifice bunts (5).

He hit .336 on the season with 3 homers and 2 doubles while scoring 27 runs.

Women's basketball

Wisconsin-Stevens Point freshman Olivia Pawlak (Lakes) was named the team's most improved player at the end of the year picnic celebration at Jordan Park in Stevens Point.

Pawlak was voted by her teammates for this award based on her hard work and dedication to getting better each day at practice.

She scored 5 points with 2 rebounds and 1 block in eight minutes of play during UW-Platteville's game on Feb. 7.

Women's track

Illinois State sophomore Lindsey Lewis (Grant) took seventh in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 11:08.33.

Earlier in the year, she captured a personal-best in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:00.24 at the Illinois Twilight meet, which is ranked ninth on Illinois State's all-time best list.

Men's track

Augustana sophomores Kevin Barbian (Libertyville) and Kyle Hucker (Wauconda) will head to the Division III men's outdoor track and field championships on Thursday at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Barbian throws the discus while Hucker runs in the 4x400 meter relay.

Pauly proposal

Who knows, it may have been a first in the Mid-Suburban League sporting world.

Disguised as an umpire, Palatine assistant girls lacrosse and girls basketball coach Joe Capalbo was waiting at home plate when Pirates varsity softball coach Nicole Pauly walked out for the pregame meeting with the umps and opposing Resurrection coach.

Pauly's fiance removed his mask and got down on one knee to propose to Pauly, who accepted at home plate.

Now that's the way to hit a home run to start of your engagement.

For the record, Pauly's Pirates, celebrating senior day, won 5-2 over the Bandits.

Softball

• Wisconsin-Whitewater freshman pitcher Julia Camardo (Buffalo Grove) and freshman outfielder Caitlin Catino (Buffalo Grove) were named to the first team of All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Whitewater freshman catcher Nikki Mikosz (Wheeling) earned honorable mention accolades.

They helped the Warhawks (29-14) win their fourth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship title and reach the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

Camardo was been UW-Whitewater's ace during the 2016 campaign. She entered the NCAA Tournament with a 17-4 record and a 1.97 ERA in 27 appearances, including 18 starts, 16 complete games, 4 shutouts and 2 saves. She led the league in wins, shutouts, innings pitched (149⅓), strikeouts (160) and opponents batting average (.205).

Catino ranks among the WIAC's top 10 in batting average (.362, 10th), runs scored (40, Tied-1st), RBI (31, 5th), total bases (70, 3rd), hits (47, T-5th), home runs (4, T-4th), triples (3, T-3rd), stolen bases (10, T-7th), on-base percentage (.424, 9th) and slugging percentage (. 538, 7th).

Mikosz was batting .327 heading into the NCAA regional, ranking among league leaders in doubles (12, 3rd), RBI (25, 9th), total bases (60, 10th), walks (14, T-5th) and slugging percentage (.531, 8th). She was the team's top hitter in WIAC games with a .444 batting average and 15 RBI.

Boys lacrosse

The Mid-Suburban League all-conference team first team: senior Tyler Klima (Schaumburg), senior Peter Fritz (Hoffman Estates), senior Mitchell Stathakis (Barrington), junior Michael Anzelmo (Schaumburg), freshman Riley Mahon (Fremd), sophomore Kristopher Casey (Barrington), senior Tim Saubert (Hoffman Estates), junior Matthew Eaker (Schaumburg), senior William Pankratz (Fremd) and senior William Murphy (Schaumburg).

The second team features senior Mark Daneiz (Barrington), senior Michael Regan (Barrington), senior Keegan Pierce (Hoffman Estates), senior Nick Divizio (Fremd) and junior Austin Anzelmo (Schaumburg), junior Nick French (Barrington), junior Kevin Kubinski (Schaumburg), senior Sean Yakes (Schaumburg), senior Trevir Razo (Fremd) and senior Garrison Rose (Conant).

Earning honorable mention were senior Anthony Haaland (Schaumburg), junior Jacob Chang (Conant), senior Cole Nielsen (Fremd), senior Ethan Small (Barrington) and senior Ryan Howson (Hoffman Estates).
