Mundelein trustees reject cell tower plan

A controversial plan to erect a cellular communications tower in Mundelein failed to get the support of the village board Monday night, essentially dooming the proposal.

A Wheaton company called Central States Tower proposed erecting an 81-foot-tall pole at the Chapel, a church at 1966 W. Hawley St.

The plan has been criticized by residents, especially from the nearby Tullamore neighborhood. They said the pole would be unsightly and hurt property values, among other concerns.

Mundelein's planning and zoning commission opposed the plan, too, saying the village board shouldn't approve permits that would allow the tower to be built.

On Monday, trustees heeded that advice and formally asked village staffers to draft ordinances rejecting the permit requests. Final votes on those ordinances could be held next month.

Monday's action came after a real estate agent representing Central States Tower questions talked about the proposal and the opposition.

Agent Mike Duchant of Dolan Realty Advisors cautioned the board that poor cellular service will hurt property values, especially as more people abandon traditional landlines in favor of cellphones.

But trustees weren't swayed.
