Images: Icons of Medinah

Quite literally, Medinah Country Club put the community on the map.

Back in 1924, the Shriners of Medinah Temple in Chicago founded the club to provide recreational opportunities for members of the fraternal organization and their families. The Shriners created the club, which stretches from Lake Street to Irving Park Road along Medinah Road, and gave the community its name.

Still a private club today, Medinah Country Club has put the community of Medinah on the map figuratively as well. With three renown golf courses, the club and the community have played host to three U.S. Opens, a U.S. Senior Open, a PGA Championship and, most recently, the 2012 Ryder Cup. The major tournaments have drawn attention and visitors from across the country and around the world.

But it's not the only site in Medinah that has drawn international visitors. Both the Hari Om Mandir across from the country club and the Shree Swaminarayan Temple near Medinah and Irving Park roads have welcomed religious leaders and worshippers from India.

Nestled among the eye-catching architecture of the country club and the temples are the schools, stores, train station and post office that show the everyday hustle and bustle of a lively community and the parks and natural areas that offer a bit of rest from that suburban life. Each location is an icon of Medinah.
