Carl Sandburg College drafts budget with little state aid

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - Carl Sandburg College officials have drafted a budget for the coming school year that relies on virtually no funding from Illinois lawmakers still embroiled in the state's budget stalemate.

Chief Financial Officer Lisa Blake expects to receive $734,000 in state aid for the 2016-17 school year. Blake says she would "be ecstatic" if the west-central Illinois school gets that much from the state.

The (Galesburg) Register-Mail reports (http://bit.ly/1qBjVXc ) the school was able to balance its planned $26 million budget for the next school year with a 13 percent spending decrease.

Blake says that came primarily from cutting its adult education services, extension center buildings and the staff associated with those programs.

The school's trustees tentatively approved the budget Thursday, but will vote June 23 on formally adopting that spending plan.
