Elk Grove library won't build second floor

The Elk Grove Village Public Library won't expand to a second level, library board trustees have decided, but officials will look at repurposing existing space for more study and meeting rooms.

The proposed 20,000-square-foot second floor addition would have cost an estimated $3 million, plus money to furnish it, and was deemed too expensive by library board members, said Library Director Debra Nelson. The addition would have covered a portion of the 63,000-square-foot library.

The idea has been brought up through the years, but trustees gave it another look in conjunction with a $1 million roof replacement project expected to commence this summer. It was discussed at a regular board meeting and a buildings and grounds committee meeting this month.

After the roof project is completed, library officials say they plan to turn their attention to moving things around in the adult services department to make more space for small individual study rooms and other meeting rooms. The library currently has one group study room and one large meeting room.

The library may hire a space planner to help with the process, Nelson said.

Officials met this week with contractors interested in the roof project. Bids are due next week, and the library board is expected to approve a contract for the work next month. The building at 1001 Wellington Ave. opened in 1990, and the roof being replaced is the original one.
