Hanover Township celebrates community service with awards

More than 140 people attended the Hanover Township Supervisor's Community Service Award banquet held in April, at the Hanover Township Senior Center.

Each year a volunteer committee reviews and approves the nominations submitted for five different categories. Nominations are judged on the service activities of the individual or community organization, in addition to the impact the service has on the community and individuals in the community.

The committee, comprised of Linda Best, Lori Ann Airdo, Lee Beattie, Mike Dexter and Lorrie Glaser, presented awards to: Anupa Joseph, Outstanding Youth Volunteer; Joan and Gary Plice, Outstanding Senior Volunteer; Kevin King, Outstanding Adult Volunteer; Izaak Walton League of America - Elgin Chapter, Outstanding Organization; and Fiesta Market, Outstanding Business of the Year.

"It truly speaks to the work being done all around the township to receive nominations that touch every community," said Brian P. McGuire, Hanover Township Supervisor. "We are honored to show a small token of gratitude to the nominees and award winners for the service they provide to the township and its residents."

Those winning the Supervisor's Choice Awards: Mirva Diaz, Outstanding Adult Volunteer; Nancy Madsen, Outstanding Senior Volunteer; Makena Tisor, Outstanding Youth Volunteer; Lexington Health Network of Streamwood, Outstanding Business of the Year; and Streamwood Woman's Club, Outstanding Organization of the Year.

The evening's top award, the Mary Ellen "Mel" Runzel Volunteer Service Award, was presented to Marcus Jaeger, owner of Countryside Funeral Homes. For decades, Jaeger and his family have been generous in supporting dozens of community projects and nonprofit organizations. He is an active member of the Bartlett Rotary Club and a past president of the Streamwood Chamber of Commerce.

The award was created in 2013 to honor Mel for her immeasurable efforts in creating new programs and recruiting volunteers throughout the community as a former Township Trustee and Township Welfare Services Director.
