Boys volleyball: Vernon Hills wraps up regular season by topping Palatine

Jared Bennett pounded 12 kills, and Vernon Hills' boys volleyball team concluded regular-season action with a 25-21, 25-19 win over Palatine on Thursday night.

The Cougars will take a 21-14 record into the postseason.

"Our guys were pretty motivated to test themselves against the No. 7 seed in our sectional, since the coaches placed us 8th," Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry said. "It's a good measuring stick at the end of the year. So, even though we made too many errors serving and hitting, it was good to see the guys find a way to fight back."

Jake Fiarito served 14 of 14 with 4 aces for the Cougars.

"Jake was struggling to find the window with some of his sets," Curry said. "So to see him head to the service line when we were down at the end of set two and run off 8 service points (including 4 aces) gives us a good feeling about where his head was at. He was still locked in."

Stevenson d. Grant: Justin Leonard had 11 kills for the Patriots, who won 25-13, 17-25, 25-17 in the North Suburban Conference finale.

Alex Pieprzycki added 9 kills for Stevenson (17-17).
