Softball: Wheeling wins a wild one

Wheeling's softball team rallied late for its first win this spring with a 15-hit attack in a 13-12 victory over visiting Lake Forest.

Trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Wildcats scored 5 runs to take the lead for good.

Top hitters for Wheeling (1-22) were Christie Ambrose (4-for-5, RBI), Olivia Walker (2-for-5, 3 runs), Nikki Ferraro (3-for-4, double, 3 RBI, 2 runs), Abby Greenspan (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run) and Kirsten Wilhelm (2-for-4, 3 RBI).

Sophomore Dakota Medrano earned the win.

Rolling Meadows 15, St. Viator 6: Sophomore Mallory King went 4-for-5 with a RBI as the host Mustangs improved to 16-15 with the nonconference win.

Other top hitters for Meadows were Megan King (2-for-5, RBI), Sara Benner (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Elkins (2-for-5, home run, double, 4 RBI), Paige Connor (2-for-4), winning pitcher Lydia Schultz (3-for-4, RBI) and Meghan Slowik (1-for-2, triple, 3 RBI).

Cam VanValkenburg (3-for-4, double), Adeline Swiderski (2-for-4, home run, double) and Jenna Breslin (2-for-4, home run) led the offense for the Lions (10-19).

Maine East 6, Maine West 5 (9 inn): Senior Kayla Pociejewski belted a home run and triple while junior Grace Feldkamp had 3 hits, including a homer for the Warriors.

Teammate Gabriella Demma had a pair of hits for Maine West while Anne Lipinski had one.
