Northwest suburban students place among state's top young journalists

Several Northwest suburban high school students placed highly this spring in the 11th annual IHSA state journalism competition.

Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire boasted two first-place winners, a second-place finisher, and as a team finished second in the state behind Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

Samantha Sparber captured the state championship in sports writing, while Stevenson classmate Cindy Yao won the state title in news writing.

Nikol Safranova of Stevenson placed second in the newspaper design category. The overall second-place school team is advised by Dean Bradshaw.

Other individual first-place winners from the Northwest suburbs include Megan Provost of Wheeling High School for headline writing, Lauren Miller of Prospect High School for photo storytelling, and Paige Pannozzo of Hersey High School for yearbook caption writing.

Dillon Alexander of Barrington High School placed third for review writing, while both Lindsey Hammel and Sarah Cottone of Buffalo Grove High School shared third-place for yearbook theme development.
