Crash kills Barrington Hills man, injures ex-Bears Hanie, LaRocque

A 35-year-old man died and his two passengers, both former Chicago Bears players, were injured Monday night when his car struck a tree along a residential Barrington Hills street, police said. Salvatore DiMucci of Barrington Hills was pronounced dead after the crash, while passengers Caleb Hanie and Joey LaRocque were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Full story.

Judge hears case to drop some charges against Melodie Gliniewicz

The defense attorney for Melodie Gliniewicz says the unlawful use of charitable funds charges against her should be dropped, arguing that she should not be penalized for the actions of her disgraced husband, Joseph. But prosecutors say the Gliniewicz couple served as fiduciary trustees of the Fox Lake Law Enforcement Explorer Post 300 accounts and worked in tandem to take donated money for personal use. Documentary on murder of Rolling Meadows student airs tonight

A documentary about the 2001 downstate murder of Shannon McNamara, a college student from Rolling Meadows, airs tonight on the Investigation Discovery channel. McNamara, a Rolling Meadows High School graduate and aspiring teacher, was killed during her senior year at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Anthony Mertz was convicted of her murder in 2003. Full story.

Suburban activists like chairman's Route 53 about-face

Opponents of the proposed Route 53 north extension have enthusiastically endorsed what was described as a "bold and courageous" stance by Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor to close the books on the plan and transform the corridor into a nonmotorized greenway. Activists were joined yesterday by Lawlor and several Lake County Board members and other elected officials to support Lawlor's surprising announcement Monday to scrap the controversial plan because of cost and other factors. Cops: Naperville student wasn't victim of hate crime in Iowa

A black University of Iowa freshman from Naperville was not the victim of a hate crime, despite telling police he was attacked and called racial slurs, authorities said Tuesday. Instead, Iowa City police said Marcus Owens was involved in three altercations early May 1 - one in which he pushed and punched a person, and another in which he grabbed and tried to strike another person. Ex-Wheaton man: Killing wife 'my only way out,' documents say

Yeveginy Savenok told police he figured his wife was going to take his children and killing her was "probably like my only way out," prosecutors said. The 30-year-old 2008 Wheaton College graduate was charged yesterday with two counts of first-degree murder, one for his wife, Lyubov, and one for her unborn child, at their home in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
