Boys gymnastics: Seventh-place finish suits Mundelein
Mundelein coach Jesse Piland was pleased with his team and its seventh-place finish the 65th annual boys gymnastics state finals at Hinsdale Central on Friday.
"We got to state, and that was our goal," Piland said. "There are a lot of teams in the state that want to be here. But we got the chance to be here so we are happy."
Mundelein scored a 145.80 to finish a full point ahead of Wheaton co-op, which scored a 144.80 and finished eighth.
Niles West won the state title with a 154.75 with Glenbard West second with a 154.40 and Fremd third with a 151.55.
Piland had a senior-dominated squad led by Brandon Swanson along with Jordan Ader, Ismael Antunez and Noe Alcantar. He also counted on Greg Godellas, Tyler Collins, Yianni Wiechering and Carson Bennett as the Mustangs performed well.
"I though we did very well tonight," Piland said. "The judging at the state meet is a a little tougher. But everybody hit their routines and stuck it out through the end of the year."
The Mustangs did get even better news with the performance of Swanson. The senior tied Schaumburg's Chasen Chau for fifth place in the all-around with a 51.35.
"I had a very good meet," said Swanson, whose best score was a 9.10 on the floor. "It was great to be here with my teammates."
Niles West's Nomondalai Jamiyankhuu won the all-around title with a 55.35. He was followed by Dundee-Crown's Satchel Hudson, who had a 53.65, Palatine's Prakash Nigam, who had a 52.55 and Willowbrook's Adam Sousa.
