Kane County sheriff's office investigating Aurora Township shooting

Two men say they were shot Wednesday night while sitting in their car outside an apartment complex in unincorporated Aurora Township, Kane County sheriff's officials said.

The victims, Aurora and St. Charles residents, told authorities an unknown subject approached their car, which was in the parking lot at 1601 Reckinger Road, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. The subject started shooting into the car, hitting both men.

About 11:50 p.m., the two victims showed up at the Aurora Police Department, where they had driven themselves after the shooting, officials said. They were taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Sheriff's detectives found evidence of the shooting at the scene. Nobody is in custody, and authorities don't have any suspect information, but sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said there's no reason to believe the public is in danger.

Though still trying to determine a motive, investigators "have not ruled out that the sale or purchase of illegal drugs played a role in this shooting," according to the sheriff's office.

"We're fairly certain that this was isolated to this kind of activity," Gengler said.

Anyone with information is asked to call sheriff's detectives at (630) 444-1103.
