CLC students place at SkillsUSA state competition

Six College of Lake County career and technical education students competed and earned medals at the SkillsUSA Illinois State Conference April 21-23 in Springfield.

They competed in automated manufacturing technology, automotive refinishing technology, collision repair, computer programming and technical drafting.

"All nine of our students represented CLC well and competed confidently, with class and style. I am very proud of them," said Tina Ye, Ph.D., coordinator of the SkillsUSA CLC chapter and chair/professor of the CAD department.

The CLC students who earned medals were:

• Wesley Hampson of Winthrop Harbor, first place in Computer Programming

• Roberto Cuevas of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, first place in Technical Drafting

• Lukas Fliess of Union Grove, Wisconsin, second place in Collision Repair

• Steve Grimm of Lake Villa, Shawn Mayoh of Round Lake and Anthony Rice of Winthrop Harbor, second place in Automated Manufacturing Technology

Other competitors were Cesar Nunez of Waukegan, Scott Meyers of Gurnee and Jeff Herson of North Chicago.

The first-place winners will go on to compete in SkillsUSA National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, in June 2016.

In addition to Dr. Ye, faculty coaches included Scott Reed (mathematics/computer programming), Octavio Cavazos (automotive collision repair) and Jeff Hines (Computerized Numerical Control).
