Bartlett Library patrons create fairy gardens

On Saturday, May 7, 49 patrons immersed themselves in the art of making fairy gardens at the Bartlett Library program "Mother and Daughter Fairy Garden." Five Illinois Master Gardeners came with the necessary supplies in order to create fairy gardens.

Items to assemble the fairy gardens included birdhouses made from cork, bird baths made out of sea shells and fairy houses made from colorful paper and toilet paper rolls. Additional items needed to create the miniature gardens were pea gravel, dirt and the flowers of Blue Star Creeper, Alyssum and Schefflera.

The program really encouraged bonding since the families worked together to assemble the pieces so they could each make their own collective family fairy gardens.

During the program, the Master Gardeners explained the origin of the tale of fairy gardens, which was that in ancient times, fairies would come in and do harm to families and their homes if they were unhappy or bored. People would then make fairy gardens to ensure the fairies' happiness; therefore they wouldn't do bad things to people's homes anymore.

Patrons in the program were happy with their gardens; it was a very popular program and a great way to kick off the celebration of Mother's Day (May 8).

The next Youth & Teen Services program is "Exploring Computers" on Wednesday, May 11 at 4 p.m. In this hands-on program, children from grades 3-5 will learn how computers work. Registration required.
