President says Chicago State must work harder to find funds

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago State University officials say the school has to find other funding streams if it wants to thrive.

During its first board meeting since the university was forced to lay off a third of its staff, President Thomas Calhoun Jr. said Friday the school won't settle for simply remaining in "survival mode.'" He said Chicago State is in the second decade of a consistent decline in state funding.

The university has started a telethon to solicit donations from more than 40,000 alumni.

The Illinois Senate agreed Thursday to spend an additional $454 million on struggling colleges and universities. It's a stopgap as lawmakers continue a standoff over a full budget.

Last month, lawmakers used $600 million left over in an education fund to help colleges make it through the summer.
