Topgolf offers much more than golf

An interview with Mary Sprow, director of sales at Topgolf Naperville.

Q: What is Topgolf?

A: Topgolf is the emerging global leader in golf entertainment, serving millions of guests annually. Players hit golf balls containing computer microchips that track each shot's accuracy and distance while also awarding points for hitting targets on the outfield. Each venue offers an upscale and playful experience, featuring an impressive food and beverage menu.

Q: Are there plans for more in the area?

A: Our locations are selected based on a number of factors, including population density, city demographics, a site's visibility from a main road or highway, proximity to other local businesses and entertainment venues, and, of course, a site with at least 12 acres to build on! We have aggressive expansion plans across the U.S. and in the Midwest in particular. In fact, Topgolf is opening 7-10 venues a year for the next three years.

Q: What sets Topgolf apart from other gaming venues?

A: There is no other venue quite like Topgolf. We offer unique point-scoring games you can't find anywhere else. We also offer free practice for high school golf teams as well as discounts for military, fire, police and EMS personnel.

Q: What size events can you accommodate?

A: We can host up to 1,200 guests. We routinely host traditional meetings, fundraisers, trade shows, conferences, private dining, client entertainment and team-building.

Q: Who invented Topgolf?

A: Topgolf was invented by two brothers who were practicing their golf swings in London. Boredom quickly took hold, and they began brainstorming ways they could liven up the sport and improve their skills at the same time. They envisioned a place where they could work on their game and also have the best time of their lives. And although the idea for Topgolf came from hard core golfers, more than half of all Topgolf guests describe themselves as nongolfers.

Q: Tell us one unique fact about the venue.

A: Topgolf Naperville is open year-round. The bays are climate controlled with infrared heaters when it's chilly and oscillating fans when it's a bit steamy. Oh, and there's also seating for up to six people in each bay and very friendly servers who will bring you tasty food and refreshing drinks.

Q: What's trending?

A: Most people have shorter attention spans these days, which means multidimensional events are key. By combining meetings, food and beverage service and interactive activities all in one location, it's easy to keep your guess engaged. On another front, the rise of social media has resulted in attendees connecting with each other before the event even begins. Be sure to check out the Topgolf events video on our YouTube channel - it offers a great way to get your guests excited and engaged about their event.

Q: How about attendees who don't golf?

A: Do they like good food? Do they enjoy refreshing, cold beverages? How about hanging out with their buddies while getting some fresh air and listening to music? If the answer to any of these questions in "yes," then they'll have a great time at Topgolf. Most people who play the game don't even call themselves "golfers." Trust us, we've done extensive marketing research. Anyone can play and compete, so no need to be intimidated.
