Softball: Zdroik sets St. Edward career K record

St. Edward senior Lindsay Zdroik became the school's all-time strikeout leader Thursday when, working in two games, she fanned 12 batters as the Green Wave swept a Metro Suburban West from IC Catholic Prep.

In Game 1, Zdroik finished a suspended game she had started earlier this season, recording 8 strikeouts in a 3-1 win. She then started Game 2, the regularly scheduled game, and fanned 4 in 2⅔ innings, giving her 682 career strikeouts, breaking the record of 680 set by 1999 graduate Jackie Brittain.

Zdroik also drove in 2 runs in the first game and had 3 hits in the second game as the Green Wave moved to 18-7 for the season and 9-3 in the MSC West.

In the opener, Allison Stratman and Jessy Kramp had doubles for St. Edward while in the nightcap, which St. Edward won 7-5, Stratman (2 hits, HR), Rachel Lesh (2 hits, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) and Lindsey Mauritzen (3B, RBI) led the offense.

CL South 5, Cary-Grove 4: Carly Chovanec (2B, RBI) and Emily Sulikowski (2B, 2 RBI) had 3 hits each to lead the Gators (10-9, 4-3) to a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win. Taylor Kassel added a double for Crystal Lake South and Sam Burgard picked up the win in relief. Brianne Prank had 2 hits with a double and an RBI for Cary-Grove (6-14, 1-6). Rachel Stanley suffered the loss.

Huntley 5, CL Central 2: Winning pitcher Tiffany Giese, Hayley O'Mara (RBI) and Sofia Tenuta (2B, 2 RBI) had 2 hits each for Huntley (16-5) in this FVC crossover.

McHenry 3, Dundee-Crown 1: Deanna Origer had 2 hits with a double for Dundee-Crown (13-13, 2-5) in this FVC Valley loss. Sydney Ruggles took the loss despite allowing only 5 hits with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Batavia 14, Elgin 1: Toni Galas had 3 hits with a double, home run and 4 RBI as well as 3 stolen bases to lead Batavia (12-9, 8-5) to an Upstate Eight River win. Jaelen Lisberg drove in 3 runs for the Bulldogs, Rachael Lovestrand had 2 hits and an RBI, Jena Bendoraits had 3 hits with a home run and 3 RBI and Alena Theis added a double. Kaylan Waldron was the winning pitcher, allowing just 3 hits with 10 strikeouts and 3 walks. Jessica Rago had an RBI for Elgin (6-18, 3-10).

South Elgin 9, West Chicago 8: In the UEC Valley, Hannah Spivey (2 hits, 3B, RBI), Haley Szubert (2B, 3 RBI) and Amber Derr (2 hits, 2B, RBI) led the Storm (13-14, 6-7) to the win. Also contributing for South Elgin were Mariah Spivey (2 hits, RBI) and Graceanne Aldred (2 hits).

Geneseo 2, Kaneland 1: Aly Jesionowski (2B) and Hannah Theobald (2 hits, RBI) led Kaneland (14-10) in this Northern Illinois Big XII crossover loss. Jesionowski suffered the loss, allowing just 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.

St. Charles East 17, Jacobs 2: Megan Daly had 3 doubles and 5 RBI while Katie Kolb (2 doubles) and Kelly Rinker (3B, 3 RBI) had 3 hits each as the Saints (22-3-1) won this nonconference game. Delaney Devor had 2 hits and 2 RBI for SCE while Rylee Stout added a double and 2 RBI, Sarah Kreiner had a double and Paige Ligocki a double and an RBI. Jordan Hall was the winning pitcher with relief help from Devor. Sarah Murray had 2 hits with a double for Jacobs (7-9).

Westminster Christian 12, Aurora Christian 2: Taryn Boltz threw a 1-hitter with 9 strikeouts and had a home run and a triple to lead the Warriors (7-10, 5-4) to a Northeastern Athletic Conference win. Sophia Hopkins (2 hits, 2B, 3 RBI) and Sarah Schmitt (2 hits, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) also pitched in for Westminster. AC dropped to 3-13 overall and 2-6 in the NAC.

Rosary 6, De La Salle 1: Xandria Olsen and Anna VanGundy had 2 hits each for Rosary in this GCAC win. Winning pitcher Sarah Willman, who allowed 4 hits with 7 strikeouts and no walks, added a double for the Royals.
