Softball: Fremd finishes strong against Palatine

Fremd's softball team stayed well within striking distance of Mid-Suburban League West softball leader Conant by rallying for a 14-7 triumph at Palatine.

The Vikings trailed 4-3 when played resumed on Thursday in the bottom of the third inning from a suspended game.

But they brought their bats to take the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning at 5-4 and then erupted for 6 runs in the top of the fifth.

Sophomore Nikki Kehoe (13-3) went the first four innings to earn the win while Hannah Ban handled the next two innings and Jessica Mazur took over in the seventh, when she struck out two to close off the win.

Fremd improved to 17-4 and 8-2 in the West, two games behind Conant (16-2, 10-0).

Leading the Fremd offense were Alyssa Garcia (3-for-5, 3 RBI, 3 runs), Julia Wacker (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 4 RBI, 2 runs), AnnMarie O'Sullivan (2-for-3, double) and Lexi D'Ambrosio (2-for-5, double, 2 RBI).

Holly Straup and Becca Uhrich also had hits for the Vikes.

The offense for Palatine (8-12, 5-6) was led by Maddie Craver (2-for-4, 2 runs), Grace Huff (2-for-4, 2 runs), Kenzie Craver (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI) and Brooke Bauer (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI).

Prospect 17, Wheeling 1 (5 inn.): Sophomore Colleen Palczynski belted a home run and went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI for visiting Prospect (4-15, 3-7) in the MSL East game.

Other top hitters for the Knights were Alyssa Cacini (3-for-3, 4 runs, 2 RBI) and Cassie Cuniff (2-for-4, RBI). Teammate Alex Kanter scored 3 runs while going 1-for-3.

Maddie Borkowski (3-3), who also had a double and 3 RBI, earned the win by tossing a 2-hitter with 1 strikeout.

Christie Ambrose (1-for-3, 1 run) and pitcher Dakota Medrano (1-for-2) had the hits for Wheeling (0-13, 0-9).

Deerfield 8, Maine West 2: Allison Pearson doubled for the visiting Warriors (5-10, 3-4) who also received hits from Gabriella Demma, Kayla Pociejewski, Nicole Byerly, Grace Feldkamp and Megan Swanson in the CSL North game.
