University of Illinois student from Barrington dies

A University of Illinois student from Barrington died on Wednesday.

The Champaign County Coroner confirmed Thursday that Bret Vogt was pronounced dead at 12:01 p.m. Wednesday at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Urbana Police Sgt. Harley Rutledge confirmed the department has an ongoing investigation into the death of a student, but he said foul play is not involved.

"At this time it does not appear to be a criminal matter," Rutledge said.

Vogt, 21, was a junior at the University of Illinois majoring in general engineering, according to a school spokeswoman.

According to Vogt's social media accounts he was a longtime hockey player, member of the Delta Chi fraternity and president of the Illinois Bass Fishing Club.

The fishing club sent out a tweet late Wednesday regarding Vogt's death.

"The IBFC has lost our President Bret Vogt," it states. "We would like everyone to keep his family and friends in their prayers."

Vogt graduated from Barrington High School in 2013.

"The Barrington High School community is deeply saddened to hear of Bret's passing. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time," said Principal Steve McWilliams.
