Baseball: Victories for divisional leaders Barrington, Elk Grove
Jake Zyzda kept the Mid-Suburban West baseball leaders out in front by tossing a 5-inning, 4-hit shutout against visiting Hoffman Estates on Wednesday as Barrington won 10-0.
Zyzda struck out eight and walked one, and the Broncos' bats provided plenty of support.
Tyler Acosta, Tristan Michaels, Patrick Dehnert and Colin Starvel each had doubles to lead a 14-hit attack for Barrington (19-6, 10-1). Starvel and Zach Balogh both had 2 hits.
Hoffman Estates slipped to 7-12 and 2-10.
Elk Grove 14, Wheeling 2 (6 inn.): The Mid-Suburban East leaders scored 8 runs in the second inning and played error-free defense behind four pitchers on their way to a decisive win.
Christian Camacho got the win but only pitched 2 innings; at the plate the Grens' leadoff man finished 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI.
Other big hitters for Elk Grove (16-7, 9-2) included Jakub Sokol (3-for-4, double), Jack McEnroe (2-for-3, double) and AJ Navarro (2 hits).
Brian Maloney had a double and drove in 2 runs for Wheeling (9-16, 2-9).
Also pitching effectively for Elk Grove were Joe Lopez, Joe Leone and Tyler Selvig.
St. Viator 10, Marian Central 3: The visiting Lions won their third straight behind a steady hitting attack and a solid start from Kevin Napoleon.
Dan Sullivan homered and joined teammates Mike Ragauskis, Jack Sexton, Chris Lolli and Michael Wittich in finishing with 2 hits as St. Viator totaled 14 hits. Wittich and Ragauskis doubled, and the Lions (14-10) stole five bases.
Napoleon pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 earned runs and 4 hits while striking out seven.
Rolling Meadows 2, Buffalo Grove 1: In action Tuesday, Trent McNally doubled twice and drove in a run, and George Bravos and Mark Dillon combined to limit host Buffalo Grove to 3 hits as the Mustangs earned their first win of the season.
Bravos worked 6⅓ innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Dillon retired the final two batters to pick up a save.
Ben Moran had an RBI double in the seventh for Buffalo Grove (9-12, 5-5).
Jack Lincoln produced a double for Rolling Meadows (1-18, 1-9), and Marco Perez and Dillon also had hits.
