Ash tree removal continues in Vernon Hills

Work to remove ash trees from Vernon Hills resumed this week, as crews from the Vernon Hills Park District went to work in Century Park taking down ashes and other diseased or dying trees.

According to the park district, about 60 percent of ash trees on district property have been removed so far to address infestation by the emerald ash borer. All of them are expected to be gone by winter. Other trees being removed include willows, Austrian and Scotch pines and pioneer trees.

They're being replaced by several species of trees, including several never before planted on park sites, according to the district. Among them are apple and cherry trees, pear trees, magnolias, weeping Alaskan cedar, Princeton gold maple and European larch.
